Small Businesses and the Importance of Never Giving up. By Cristy Arnaut Perdomo

Starting a new life can be a whole challenge for someone; especially for a person that had initiated a career in a world they thought was their own. That is why entrepreneurship can be such a hard idea to embrace, in fact, it happened to be my reality, since after being fired from my ideal job at one of the greatest hotel chains of my country because of the pandemic, my whole self was obligated to think out of the box and start a business. Nonetheless, as difficult as it could be, to start up a new business and becoming an entrepreneur can be easier than being an unhappy employee forever.

The pandemic was a nightmare, a true one! It terminated lots of dreams. More than that, it killed people's hope of achieving some of the goals they ever had. People losing their jobs, houses, families tearing apart. In all contrast, my perspective after getting fired drastically changed. In a way, watching my savings account decreasing little by little was the engine I needed to get a business started. The word 'Fired' also needed to transform in a total new concept, because, I was fired from my job, I knew that, but some other things were fired too, like responsibilities with the hotel, being on time to performances and doing those kinds of things an employee has to do.

In a way, in big businesses stories, the fact of being fired has been every entrepreneur's motivator and that's how you get started. My closet was opened one night and with all of those no-needed fabulous items I had on my hangers, business got started. In all honesty, it must be mentioned that clothing is a challenge. It has been such a hard task to make people believe in the quality of the products sold, but we can add to that, the accountability in the delivery and the compromise of selling second-hand items to almost running out of clothes. It can be inferred by people online that selling clothes is a piece of carrot cake, yet selling experience will tell you it is not. Most of the times, if not all the times, a lot of help from other businesses is needed to succeed.

Small businesses can grow and expand as much as their owners can also progress and evolve. Two years were more than enough to find out that selling my own clothing items has made a huge impact in my economy. As a matter of fact, my account has more money now than it had before I got fired, but if truth be told, businesses are more than money. In my personal view, it must be recognized that a business can change every bit of one's personality. Selling requires a lot of skills that were not my strongest, such as confidence, boldness, lots of nerve and charisma. Life made me a person, but my business made me realize how much as a person myself could grow.

To summarize and conclude, entrepreneurship can impact one's life to the fullest. I can add, as a last idea that it is not for everyone! It requires strength that not a lot of people out there have. Nevertheless, as the nightmare it can be in the beginning, it can become easier if you ease the way to success, whereas you enjoy everything that comes with it. Small businesses enhance their owner’s life when they do what it takes and I can certify that life quality also transforms once their dream start taking shape.
